Assessments for Reading Level and/or Reading Fluency
Running Records
Running Records allow you to assess a student's performance as he or she reads a short passage. A running record gives the teacher an indication of whether material currently being read is too easy or too difficult for the child, and it serves as an
indicator of the areas where a child's reading can improve. Running records can also give an indication of reading fluency, including speed, accuracy, and prosody.
To Administer a Running Record, you will need:
- a passage of at least 100 words
- a 100 Box form to record student errors (see file below for a form)
- a stopwatch or timer
- a pencil
- a calculator
Steps for Administering a Running Record:
1. Explain to students that they will be reading a text aloud to you. They should read the best they can. If they come upon an
unknown word, explain that you will give them some time to figure it out but if they don't, to skip the word and continue
reading.
2. Show the student the passage and read the title. You can give them a little information on the passage if you like.
3. Ask the student to begin reading the text. Begin the timer or stopwatch once the student begins reading.
4. As the child reads, following along with a running record form. Note any reading errors, including substitutions, deletions, insertions on the running record.
5. Remember to stop the timer or stopwatch once the student finishes reading 100 words.
6. Score the assessment.
- To calculate word recognition in context (WRC): number of errors - number of words read (100)
total number of words read (100)
- To calculate reading rate: total number of words read (100) X 60
time read in seconds

Informal Reading Inventory
Informal reading inventories (IRI's) consist mainly of graded passages, typically beginning at the PrePrimer level. Each passage is followed by comprehension questions and a retelling scoring guide. Most IRI's also have graded word lists for determining where to begin giving passages and assessing the student's ability to recognize words in isolation.
Below are instructions and forms for administering the QRI IV, an IRI. This assessment is administered individually. I have this book if you would like to administer this assessment with students.

Retelling
Comprehension can be assessed by asking students to retell orally the content of the reading selection. Usually, a checklist of important details is given to determine what information the students retell. Retellings can help teachers measure how well the student internalized the content of a selection. Retellings can be used with students as early as kindergarten. One disadvantage to the retelling task is that it relies on the student's oral abilities, and deficiencies could influence teacher's judgement of how the student performed on the task.
