Author's Choice
Not to be confused with Author's Purpose, the Author's Choice standards focus on having the reader understand why the author made certain organizational and sylistic choices and what effect the author wanted those choices to have on the reader. Author's Choice standards begin in 5th grade.
Standards of Learning
5.5e: Describe how an author's choice of vocabulary contributes to the author's style.
- discuss why an author might hav used particular words and phrases
6.5c: Describe how word choice and imagery contribute to the meaning of a text.
- notice an author's craft, including use of language patterns, sentence variety, vocabulary, imagery, and figurative
language
- recognize an author's tone including serious, humorous, objective, and personal
6.5j: Identify and analyze the author's use of figurative language.
- recognize an author's use of simile (comparisons using like or as), hyperbole (intentional exaggeration), and metaphor
(comparison by saying something is something)
6.5k: Identify transitional words and phrases that signal an author's organizational pattern.
- such as words indicating time, cause and effect, or indicating more information
7.5d: Describe the impact of word choice, imagery, and literary devices including figurative lanuage.
- anaylze an author's choice and use of literary devices including foreshadowing and irony
- analyze elements of an author's style including word choice, sentence structure and language patterns, imagery,
contrasting points of view, and figurative language
- define an author's tone including serious, sarcastic, objective, humorous, disapproving, solemn, enthusiastic, and hostile
- recognize and analyze the impact of an author's choice of poetic devices, including rhyme, rhythm, meter, repetition,
alliteration, and onomatopoeia
