K-W-L Plus
K-W-L Plus is an instructional strategy that engages students in active text learning. K-W-L involves the use of a three-column graphic organizer that becomes the students' study guide as they read. In this strategy, students first brainstorm what they know (K) about the topic, generate questions about what they want to know (W), and then record what they learned after reading (L). The "Plus" part of the strategy asks students to then transform the information into a concept map and/or to write a summary.
Many students who are not proficient or active readers are confused about what they should be thinking about as they read. This strategy helps students activate what they already know before they begin reading and make predictions about the text. This strategy also helps students to organize what they have learned after they have finished reading.
K-W-L may be initiated with small groups of students or the whole class and in every content area.
